New RJM Ultra-Low NOx Burners to reduce NOx
Key Challenges
RJM was invited to engineer, model, supply and install low NOx burner modifications to reduce NOx emissions to below 200mg/Nm³, with no impact on CO or excess oxygen. The plant had undergone a major refurbishment between 2002 and 2004 when the original Deutsche Babcock burners on units 2 and 3 were replaced by Alstom low-NOx dual fuel burners and an OFA system. Howver, these Alstom burners could not meet the new 2008 limits.
RJM Solution
As the first part of the project, RJM was employed to provide a low NOx solution to units 1 & 4. This work in 2004 consisted of low NOx burner modifications and the installation of an Induced Flue Gas Recirculation (IFGR) system.
In 2007, RJM was employed to upgrade the burners on units 2 and 3 to enable AES to conform to its new 2008 emission limit values (ELVs). RJM removed the Alstom low NOx burners and OFA system and installed its own RJM Ultra-Low NOx burners. In addition to the considerably reduced levels of NOx emissions, excess air was also reduced, thereby increasing boiler efficiency.
Results
Original NOx: 1,100mg/Nm³ (Gas), 850mg/Nm³ (Oil)
Final NOx: 130mg/Nm³ (Gas), 200mg/Nm³ (Oil)
“The execution of the contract was very good. The manufacture of the new low NOx burners, the installation and the commissioning all went well. Overall, we are very satisfied with RJM and we would definitely recommend the company to other plants as experienced providers of low NOx expertise and an organisation that can solve any low NOx or combustion problem.” Peter Kiss, Project Leader – AES Tisza, Hungary
