Coal-to-Gas conversions

Converting a power plant from coal to gas can extend plant life and deliver an immediate reduction in emissions. It can also offer operators greater flexibility, utilisation and other efficiency gains.

RJM has recently completed a full coal-to-gas conversion at a power station in Spain and is currently working on another coal-to-gas conversion at a utility scale power station in the USA, with additional projects in the pipeline.

A successful conversion will have resolved how a change to gas will affect the heat transfer profile and consequently how this will impact on boiler performance. That is why RJM always uses combustion CFD modelling combined with a full boiler performance model to help develop an optimal solution. CFD modelling is also harnessed to ascertain what level of FGR (Flue Gas Recirculation) will be required to reduce NOx and whether existing FD fans (induced FGR) will suffice, or if new FD fans (forced FGR) will be needed.

In terms of hardware, at the heart of an RJM coal-to-gas conversion are new RJM ultra-low NOx CleanAir Burners™ which will have been specially designed and manufactured to suit the precise requirements of the plant, following detailed CFD and physical modelling to validate our solutions. In many instances, each individual burner on the same unit will be subtly different to ensure peak performance.

RJM’s fuel switching experience ranges from large utility power stations to smaller, industrial plants that generate their own energy on-site.
